Vertical gas scrubber for treatment of acidic exhaust gases

The problem

We were contacted by a customer active in the medical sector, to offer them a tailor-made solution for a contaminated airflow. A new electrolytic polishing production line is being built at the customer’s site. Various acids at higher temperatures will be used in their production process. The acidic exhaust gases that arise, must be cleaned before they can be discharged into the environment.

Our solution

PCA Air did chose a vertical gas scrubber to purify the polluted airflow. Gas scrubbers neutralize harmful components in air or exhaust streams. Due to intensive contact between an air stream and a liquid such as water, certain gaseous components dissolve in the water. By then dosing the right chemicals into the sprayed water, the absorbed pollution is converted into, for example, a soluble salt.

We always strive for the highest possible efficiency, so that as many harmful components as possible are removed from the airflow. Since we are dealing with water-soluble acids, we opted for 1 zone with loose packing material.  In the dosage of reactant chemicals, NaOH was chosen as the product to be used against the acid. This will ensure that the acids are even better removed from the airflow. At the request of the customer, a 4m chimney in PP was supplied.

In order to provide the customer with a complete customized solution, the entire process was also automated by PCA Automatisering.

Specifications

  • Gas scrubber flow rate 2200 m³/h (max.)
  • 1 loose packing material spray zone
  • Dosage of NAOH reactant
  • Water retention vessel for the whole installation
