Repair works to cooling tower mechanical drive
The gearbox of the ventilator in cooling tower at refinery in Rotterdam’s port became jammed. The gearbox had broken off, together with the supporting structure. The company called on Almeco to carry out the necessary repairs. We were happy to help them with this.
We first removed the defective metal parts manually. We then designed a new supporting structure in stainless steel after measuring. Since the cooling tower had been erected in an ATEX zone, only tools and equipment suitable for this could be used. This is why we performed the work manually, and only attached the supporting inox structure with bolts. That way, we preventing sparks occurring when carrying out the works.
We subsequently fitted a new drive gear, shaft and gearbox, as well as an overhauled motor and fan. Everything was then carefully aligned and balanced.
Lastly, the gearbox also caused damage to the polyester fan stack when it jammed, and we repaired this with fibreglass-reinforced polyester so that the cooling tower was once again totally ready for use.
